BACK EXERCISES FOR SIZE - WHY ROWS ARE BETTER THAN PULLDOWNS

Writer's picture: BUILDAGORILLABUILDAGORILLA

jngindu.fit - Personally prefer rows, I actually feel like I’m building a back with rows, and it’s straight up hard work

IN A POLL - 78% PREFER ROWS TO PULLDOWNS FOR OVERALL BACK DEVELOPMENT

WHEN ASKED WHICH IS THEIR FAVOURITE EXERCISE

1 - T BAR ROWS AND PULL UPS ARE JOINT FIRST

3 - LAT PULL DOWNS AND BARBELL ROWS TIE SECOND

With my experience and the outcomes of building my back muscles. It is very likely that rows have contributed the most both for the width and thickness.

Even if you are not completely ... it is worth noting that pull downs have their place.. but for a beginner or a pro you will see more rows than Pulldowns

laetitia_fitness - I personally prefer pull downs, I find it can be more versatile - with building the lats as well biceps & rear delta at the same time

Rows offer the chance to get thicker rhomboids, traps and lower back, the pull downs simply only targets a certain muscle area, even then pull ups are more likely the best version of pull downs when it comes to the lats. Pull ups have a much better range of motion, and include a stretch on the muscle that the barbell row just can’t match. There’s also more constant tension

grippin_body It’s a difficult one as they are both really good exercises but if I wanted one that worked my whole back and more thickness, I’d most defo say rows, but seated rows

The traps elevate, retract, depress and upwardly rotate the scapula. Pullups might get the lower traps a bit, but are overall a poor trap exercise. Bent over rows hit all three sections of the traps very hard and are one of the best trap exercises out there

king.tutu_lifts -I personally prefer Pulldowns. The mind muscle connection with the muscle and weight. With my physique I’m more concentrated on building a wider back

Another version of pull downs that are very much effective are.. ‘underhand close grip’ lat pulldown, Compared to the pull up, the barbell row is going to put on more size on your TRAPS. For a big upper back (which is mostly your traps) this will make you look HUGE. They are your 3rd largest muscle in the body.

daviddd.a - Tough one, I personally prefer rows as I feel I get a greater stretch of my back muscles and I prefer the variations to the exercise. But pull downs are still key due to the different plane in which im hitting my back !

Rows offer much more way to develop a bigger back with certain movement that can thicken the lats rather than stretching them (V-Bar Rows) gives the lats a good stretch whilst allowing to target the entire back with intensity and load.

bxg.tims - Always done rows instead, very rare I see ppl doing pull downs but the range of motion makes me think it may be more effective for growth

With this being said it is a fair point to advice beginners to start off their back training with 5-10 sets of 5-10 reps on pull ups, add heavy rows T bar, Seated cable, Underhand grip, Chest supported and including the pull ups, one more exercise for pull downs.

nassset__ - I prefer rows, as I personally find them more effective for mind-muscle connection. Defiantly feel it better

In the lat pulldown, your lats likely get a slightly better training effect than in rows because of how the lats’ origins and insertions are positioned. Vertical pulling allows your lats a greater range of motion and is more in line with the muscles’ attachment points.

petersanny01 - Great stimulation and isolation of a back muscles development. Good for improving body posture

But, your lats have a wide origin, which means that for optimal training, you should probably train your lats in more than just one direction of pull. That’s where doing both a vertical and a horizontal pulling movement comes in: they complement each other and together work more muscle fibers in your lats (and your back in general) than either one does on its own.
