WHAT ARE FAT BURNERS?
The term ‘fat burner’ is used to describe nutrition supplements that are claimed to acutely increase fat metabolism or energy expenditure
ARE FAT BURNER PILLS EFFECTIVE?
While it is known that dietary supplements containing a combination of thermogenic ingredients can increase resting metabolic rate (RMR), the magnitude can vary based on the active ingredient and/or combination of active ingredients.
CONS OF FAT BURNERS:
One of the common concerns about using a thermogenic supplement is its effect on hemodynamic variables, such as heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP). Previous investigations have suggested that caffeine does have a stimulatory effect on systolic blood pressure (SBP), but the combination of additional ingredients in the product must be taken into consideration.
SCIENTIFICALLY RESEARCHED FAT BURNER:
For many other supplements, although some show some promise, evidence is lacking.
Caffeine, green tea extract, and orlistat appear to have the most research to back up their claims.
RESEARCH
The aim of this study was to examine the effects of a multi-ingredient thermogenic fat loss supplement on [RESTING METABOLIC RATE] RMR and [BLOOD CIRCULATION] hemodynamic function in resistance-trained males. Findings from the study show that acute ingestion of the thermogenic fat loss supplement.
Iron Cuts™, leads to a significant increase in RMR when compared to a placebo in healthy men.
Ingredients include: L-Carnitine Tartrate, Green Tea (Camellia Sinensis) Leaf Extract, Caffeine Anhydrous, Panax Ginseng Root Powder, N-Acetyl-L-tyrosine, Thermodiamin (98% Evodiamine), Vinpocetine, Inositol.
The observed increase in RMR occurred with a slight increase in [SYSTOLIC AND DIASTOLIC BLOOD PRESSURE] SBP and DBP, while HR was not affected by the thermogenic supplement.
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans describes a healthy eating pattern as one that:
Includes a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products, and oils.
Includes a variety of protein foods, including seafood, lean meats and poultry, eggs, legumes (beans and peas), nuts, seeds, and soy products.
Limits saturated and trans fats, added sugars, and sodium.
Stays within your daily calorie needs.
For some individuals with a high BMI who have additional health risks,
physicians may prescribe adjunctive treatments, including FDA- approved prescription medications or bariatric surgery, in addition to lifestyle modifications [7].
Lifestyle changes that promote weight loss might also improve mood and energy levels and lower the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers
MOST USED FAT BURNER PILLS:
Not all weight loss pills and supplements are created equal. Certain pills may cause unpleasant side effects while others may not be proven to result in weight loss.
We will look at the following nine weight loss pills and supplements:
1 - Alli (orlistat)
A review of 11 studies indicated that orlistat might increase weight loss by a small amount.
The review found that those who took orlistat lost an average of 2.9 percent
more weight than those who did not take the drug.
Over 80% of orlistat‐treated patients experienced at least one GI side effect
Approximately 5% of orlistat‐treated patients discontinued therapy due to GI side effects
Orlistat may cause a change in bowel habits. People taking orlistat may
experience side effects, such as diarrhea, stomach pain, and difficulty controlling bowel movements.
2 - Caffeine
According to a study of 76 obese adults, people who had
high caffeine intake saw a greater reduction in fat mass, weight circumference,
and overall weight compared to those who had low caffeine intake.
Caffeine is a popular ingredient used in many thermogenic supplements
due to its ability to increase energy expenditure.
In agreement with these findings, Dulloo et al. 5 reported that even a low dose
of caffeine (100 mg) has the potential to induce a thermogenic effect at rest.
Over a 150‐min period, RMR was increased by 3–4% in both lean and post‐obese individuals.
Side effects of caffeine include jitteriness, increased heart rate, and trouble sleeping.
3 - Green tea extract
Some research indicates that drinks containing green tea extract may
promote the loss of fat around the stomach area. The increase in fat loss may also
result in modest weight loss.
Green tea extract, whether used on its own or in combination with caffeine,
has been shown to increase RMR.
Although green tea extract is usually well tolerated,
it can cause stomach pain, constipation, and nausea.
IN CONCLUSION:
The best way to lose weight and keep it off is to follow a sensible approach that incorporates a healthy eating plan, reduced caloric intake, and moderate physical activity under the guidance of a heath care provider.
